King Cake: A Sweet Tradition
New Orleans may be renown for Mardi Gras, but parties aren't the only thing that lure thousands of tourists to the Crescent City each year. New Orleans is also a haven for those who love food and who love to eat. Mardi Gras menus can include anything from red beans and rice to chicken and sausage gumbo to shrimp jambalaya. But, the real star of the show on any Mardi Gras menu is King Cake.
This toothsome confection is a sticky, cinnamon laced oval pastry that is iced with frosting, and sprinkled with purple, green and gold sugar. King Cake has been a part of Mardi Gras as long as the parades and King Cake parties take place from Twelfth Night, January 6, until Mardi Gras Day.
