A ROASTED SHANKBONE - a reminder of the Paschal Lamb.
A ROASTED EGG - a symbol of the Festival sacrifice offered up in
the Jerusalem Temple.
MAROR - these bitter herbs (horseradish) are a reminder of the bitterness of the Egyptian slavery.
HAROSET - a mixture of apples, nuts, cinnamon, and wine, which represents the mortar the Israelite slaves used in Egypt.
PARSLEY - this is dipped into a dish of salt water before being eaten, which is symbolic of the coming of spring and the perpetual renewal of life.
THREE MATZAHS - in commemoration of the unleavened bread which the Jews took with them when they fled Egypt.
CUP OF ELIJAH - this is usually a tall goblet which is placed with the special table setting for Elijah.
A CUSHIONED ARMCHAIR - for the leader, or a pillow placed on his chair.
This symbolizes the freedom enjoyed by the Israelites when they were redeemed from bondage.
AFIKOMEN - a dessert. The middle of the three matzahs is broken in half. The larger half which is put away to be eaten at the close of the meal is called the Afikomen.
