Mardi Graspage 3 / 5
With the first parade, came the first krewe, or club, known as Comus. This group created several Mardi Gras traditions by establishing themselves as a secret society, choosing a mythological namesake, staging a parade with floats and masked revelers, and hosting a masked ball at the culmination of the festivities. Other krewes were subsequently established and today there are more than 70 different krewes that parade through the streets of New Orleans during the 12 days prior to Mardi Gras. The most famous is the Krewe of Rex, known simply as the King of the Carnival, and was established in 1872.
