Rex: Inside a Mardi Gras Krewepage 2 / 5
Rex, King of Carnival
Perhaps the best known of all the krewes is Rex. Rex is the oldest krewe in existence and became known simply as, King of the Carnival or Monarch of Merriment. Rex was founded in 1872 by a group of young men in anticipation of a visit to Mardi Gras by Russia's Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff. Hoping to put on a spectacular and entertaining show for the Grand Duke and the citizens of New Orleans alike, Rex was born. Rex lived up to its motto—Pro Bono Publico, or For the Public Good—crowning its first King with a scepter, crown, and costume borrowed from an actor who was performing locally at the time.
Rex, King of Carnival
From its inception, Rex set out to attract visitors to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans. As early as 1886, Rex issued proclamations commanding his “subjects” to gather in New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. These proclamations were posted in train stations and in other public places around the country and New Orleans became a major tourist destination. Rex continues this tradition today issuing his “Royal Invitation” to tourism offices.
