Rex: Inside a Mardi Gras Krewepage 4 / 5
The Rex Parade
Each year a theme for the Rex parade is chosen. Themes include mythology, literature, art, and history. This year's theme is “Fables of Fire and Flame”. Recent themes have been: Royal Jazz, The Lunar Realm, and Spirits of Spring. Rex's evocative themes are transformed into stunning parade floats, rich in color and imagination, using traditional materials and techniques.
The Rex Procession is always led by the Captain of the Rex Organization astride a white horse and is flanked by mounted Lieutenants clad in green velvet. Marching bands, invited by His Majesty, are also a main feature of the parade. The come from far and near and represent the top high school, college and military marching bands nationwide.
Aside from His Majesty's Bandwagon, the Beouf Gras is one of several permanent flots that roll each year with Rex. The Beouf Gras, or Fatted Ox, is a symbol of the last meat to be eaten before Lent. For that reason, perhaps, the Beouf Gras is manned by masked chefs!
