Easter: The Moveable Feast
Easter has sometimes been called the moveable feast because the celebration of Easter occurs on a different date each year. Easter, Christianity's most important holiday, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox on March 21st—anywhere between March 22nd and April 25th.
Easter is actually an entire season in the Christian Church, rather than simply a daylong celebration. The season begins with Lent, a 40 day period of penance, fasting and reflection, that represents the time Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before he began his ministry. Holy Week, the week just prior to Easter, includes Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter which celebrates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem; Maundy Thursday, which honors Jesus' Last Supper with the Apostles; Good Friday, which commemorates Jesus' crucifixion; and Holy Saturday; which commemorates the Jesus' burial and day in the tomb. Eastertide begins on Easter Monday and lasts until Pentecost, 50 days, and is a celebration of Jesus' Ascension into Heaven.
